Wow, what a busy few months! We've hardly had time to send updates, but are excited to share the latest happenings here at Giant Artists. Campaigns, personal projects, magazine covers, videos, new websites, the cast of The Jersey Shore – we've got 'em covered. Enjoy, and have a fantastic summer!
MICHAEL SCHMELLING's Converse basketball ads (Anomaly) have hit the streets! Michael shot stills & video for a big WIRED feature on "Process," shot The Dream for the cover of THE FADER, and documented the Lower East Side gallery scene for W MAGAZINE. Michael also tried his hand at theater lighting design with the production company Every House Has A Door, for a production at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in Chicago. The play, "Let Us Think of These Things Always, Let Us Speak of Them Never," will be shown in NYC and Chicago in 2011.
JEREMY & CLAIRE WEISS worked with the fine folks at Draft FCB Chicago on a second Motorola campaign, and shot new images for K-SWISS with Adam & Co. They also shot a Boost Mobile campaign for 180 LA – out soon. The Weiss' worked with our friends at Incase & Graphite on an iPad project. Incase turned the tables and did a very nice profile on them here. And finally, after three years Day19.com has a new look! Check it out.
RJ SHAUGNESSY traveled to Barcelona to shoot for Microsoft Kin with our friends at Cinco Design. His "Back to College" campaign for Target will be out soon, as will a "Let's Go" project shot for NYC & Co. Check out his new denim stories Attack! and Nikki on his website.
KEREN RICHTER has been busy working on new t-shirt designs with Blood is the New Black, for sale at Oak in NYC. Keren is also working on graphics for Rocket Dog, and her Case-Mate cases are back in stock and available for purchase here. Keren continues to expand on her prop and textile designs, having recently worked with James Ryang on a swimwear story for Refinery29, check it out.
DAVID CALDERLEY completed 10 illustrations for the Thompson Hotel Group as part of their rebranding. He art directed and designed album packaging for the new Grace Potter album for Hollywood Records and the Official World Cup album and singles for Sony Music. David developed and designed new fragrance packaging for JOHN VARVATOS 10 Year Anniversary (in collaboration with Yard). For Saatchi & Saatchi, he completed two photo compositions for OLAY REGENERIST. David is in the final stages of developing Interpol's packaging and all merchandise & visuals for their forthcoming album and tour, continues to work on web design for BESPOKEN, and will soon be wrapping his first music video for the artist Iconiq, co-directed with Diane Martel for HSI Productions.
GLYNIS SELINA ARBAN shot the artist Samuel for Sony Music, Marsha Ambrosious for RCA Music Group, and The National. She also worked on a new piece for LULA MAGAZINE and shot for EARNSHAW'S and FOOTWEAR PLUS.
DAVID BLACK wrapped a music-based project with Cornerstone that took him all over the world shooting some of our favorite artists including: Nas, She & Him, James Mercer, Dirty Projectors, Passion Pit, The Roots, John Legend, Bomba Estereo, the Kills, The Swell Season, and more. David also shot publicity photos for Best Coast, Chrissie Hynde for NYLON, and author Paula Fox for NIDO MAGAZINE. He worked on the short film "Not Fade Away" in Ventura, directed a music video for LAPKO in Finland, and DP'd Lauren Dukoff's music video for Isobel Campbell. David also directed a video for a Yahoo!/Wenner Media advertorial – coming soon! His website is updated with new images & films. Be sure to take a look.
AARON RUELL spent the last month in Paris directing TV spots for Volkswagen and upon his return, immediately went back to work on a project for OLD SPICE with our buddies at Wieden & Kennedy.
EMILY SHUR traveled to Miami to photograph JERSEY SHORE 2 for MTV – check it out here. She also shot the band, Shel, for packaging and publicity (Universal Music). Between those projects, she managed to shoot Adam McKay for MAXIM, the new Facebook offices for TIME MAGAZINE, Molly Ringwald and Rashida Jones for BUST, Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia CEO) for INC. MAGAZINE, Gary Fisher for THE RED BULLETIN, Eva Longoria for the cover of L'OPTIMUM, Joel McHale for both GOLF MAGAZINE and MEN'S JOURNAL, and Chaske Spencer for PEOPLE MAGAZINE. Emily also worked with the kind folks at Ogilvy & Mather on an upcoming campaign for Sara Lee.
Quite a busy summer for LAUREN DUKOFF - her book, FAMILY, won a PDN Photo Annual Award in the Photography Books category - Congrats! She ventured to Vancouver to shoot a Yahoo! advertorial for Wenner Media (David Black shot video), MIA and The Pretty Reckless (cover) for Interscope, Wavves, Maroon 5, The Like, Gia Coppola for URBAN ITALIA, D LA REPUBBLICA, The Dum Dum Girls, Monte Hellman and Shannyn Sossamon for L'UOMO VOGUE. She also directed a music video for Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan's upcoming single, and is about to start production on a second.
Wardrobe Stylist SHIRLEY KURATA worked with photographer Robert Erdmann on a project for i-D MAGAZINE, and styled musicians Jenny & Johnny and The Decemberists. She also worked with Aaron Ruell on a TV spot for Qwest and with director Cole Webley on a spot for Publix (Uber Content).

We’re excited to share the new Converse Spark 2010 campaign shot by MICHAEL SCHMELLING for Anomaly – additional images here. Michael also shot Excepter for the cover of THE WIRE, The Liars for S MAGAZINE, and a Footlocker campaign for SapientNitro in NYC. Michael’s first book cover design & illustration, Dylan Thomas’ Collected Poems, is out.
Photographer RJ SHAUGHNESSY worked with our friends at Target and shot a fashion story for VICE UK. His campaign for Microsoft Kin with Cinco Design is out! Check it out here.
Photographer/Director/World Traveler DAVID BLACK is working on a month-long music-based project for Cornerstone taking him from NYC, LA, to Michigan and Bogota, Colombia. He also shot a music video for Finland’s biggest rock band, LAPKO, in Helsinki and spent some time in Paris working on personal projects.
DAVID CALDERLEY recently designed & art directed the new Grace Potter and the Nocturnals album art for Hollywood Records, and Orianthi and One Republic for Interscope. He did a total rebrand for Beriger Wines of Napa, California, in collaboration with Yard NYC, and a brand system for “theformula,” a NY-based music publishing company. David is currently working developing animation and album artwork for Interpol’s upcoming release, and a FIFA World Cup album and website for Sony Worldwide.
LAUREN DUKOFF directed a promotional video & photographed Adele for her upcoming release and album cover for XL Recordings. She also worked with Isobel Campbell for Universal Music, Sons of Sylvia and The Pretty Reckless for Interscope, and Isaac Russell for Sony Music. Lauren shot actress Taraji P. Henson for COMPLEX, Lukas Haas for L’UOMO VOGUE, Eve for COURDUROY, and Katy Perry for ROLLING STONE. Lauren’s work could be seen at various PDN 30/MOPLA events this month, and she spoke at several, as well. One busy lady!
Illustrator/Prop Stylist KEREN RICHTER’s 7” record for THE FADER’s MNDR/Os+Potentes recently launched. She worked with CULTURE MAGAZINE, released a new t-shirt design for NYLON’s 10th Anniversary with Blood is the New Black, and Urban Outfitters in the UK picked up several new designs based on May ’68 propaganda posters. SPACE IS THE PLACE MAGAZINE launched, featuring Keren and an international group of illustrators, designers & painters – check it out here. Check out the new “Prop Shop” section on her website for a glimpse at the spectacular prop & design work she’s been doing for various photographers & directors.
EMILY SHUR spent three fun-filled days shooting over 50 bands at SXSW for MySpace Music. She shot Common for COMPLEX, Secondhand Serenade for Glassnote Records, and "Fix This Yard" for A&E Networks. Emily's currently working on a portfolio for PEOPLE featuring the casting of hit show "Modern Family." On the fine art side, her Japan images are currently featured in Issue 13 of FRACTION MAGAZINE and she was accepted into this year's Review Santa Fe which takes place in June. Be sure to check out her updated website & portfolios.
Designer/Illustrator BLAKE E. MARQUIS’s new typeface Farnum is up at You Work For Them. He also did some original illustrations for HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW, and has a new art show FRIENDS + FAMILY at the Gowanus Studio Space in Brooklyn, May 22-June 12.
Photographer GLYNIS SELINA ARBAN shot Alexis Jordan for Sony Music and Mates of State, all for upcoming album releases. She also worked with BUST MAGAZINE on an upcoming women in music feature, and with FOOTWEAR MAGAZINE on a feature.
JEREMY & CLAIRE WEISS shot a Motorola campaign for our friends at DraftFCB Chicago and with Creature Seattle on a job for City University. They also shot artist Paul McCarthy for D MAGAZINE (Italy) and the band Train for Crush Mgmt.
We fully agree with PAPER MAGAZINE, wardrobe stylist SHIRLEY KURATA is one of the Beautiful People of 2010. Shirley never stops, having worked with photographer Jeff Minton on an EA Sims campaign for Wieden + Kennedy, a Teach for America campaign with director Cole Webley, musician Harper Simon, a shoot for L’UOMO and CRASH MAGAZINE, and a Kayak campaign directed by our own AARON RUELL.

Congratulations to LAUREN DUKOFF who’s included in PDN 30 this year. A well deserved honor.
We are pleased to announce photographer EMILY SHUR has joined the Giant Artists family! check her out here. We love her flawless eye for light, color, and composition and her mix of bright, often humorous, portraits and landscapes. Whether shooting a well-known celebrity or inanimate object, Emily infuses her subjects with importance, humor, and a singular point-of-view. Her work has been featured in Communication Arts (2005) and selected for publication in American Photography 22, 24, and 25 (2006, 2008, and 2009). In 2005, Emily was selected as a winner in The Art Director’s Club Young Guns global competition. In 2008, she was honored to have an image in the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2009, Emily was one of 100 photographers invited to participate in Review Santa Fe, and this year her work will be included in Humble Art’s 31 Women in Art Photography exhibition.
Today, Emily lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their dog, The Baroness, in a 105 year-old house in Echo Park.
Photographer LAUREN DUKOFF shot Lady Gaga and Beyonce for new their single “Telephone,” and Mary J. Blige for Interscope Records. Lauren worked with singer Isobel Campbell on her upcoming album, actor Chris Mintz for NYLON, and the designers Rodarte during fashion week.
Photographer/Director AARON RUELL’s new fashion story shot on location at the Madonna Inn is in the Spring issue of PAPER MAGAZINE – get it on newsstands now! The story was styled by our own Shirley Kurata.
JEREMY & CLAIRE WEISS shot Billy Corgan for ROLLING STONE and had a hugely successful gallery opening for their new space THIS in Los Angeles. It got pretty crowded in there but it was a fun time for sure! Check out their portrait of Sarah Silverman in the current issue of NYLON, their work with Levi’s Spring Men’s & Women’s denim on www.levis.com, and their Quiksilver Women’s campaign.
Photographer GLYNIS SELINA ARBAN shot Joanna Newsom for BUST, and look books for Built By Wendy and Haute Hippie. Her swimwear shoot for FOAM is now out.
Wardrobe Stylist and “Rodarte Muse” (as New York Magazine called her) SHIRLEY KURATA spent another NY Fashion Week in the trenches as creative director/stylist for Rodarte’s celebrated Spring ’11 collection. Shirley also styled Isobel Campbell for Co-op Records. Her work with Aaron Ruell can be seen in the current issue of PAPER MAGAZINE. She styled the NY TIMES MAGAZINE Olympics Winter Athletes story shot by Ryan McGinley.
Designer & Art Director DAVID CALDERLEY is busy working with Sony Music on an upcoming FIFA release, the new Roger Sanchez album and campaign, a Grammy campaign featuring Taylor Swift, Warner Music Nashville on logo development, and Thompson Hotels, among many others. His Georgia Lottery campaign is out now.
Photographer/Cinematographer/Director DAVID BLACK is currently traveling the U.S. shooting a documentary film. In January, he shot several campaigns for our friends at Chase (McGarry Bowen), and worked with CITY MAGAZINE. David’s reel has just been added to our website – check it out here.
Body Painter/Skin Printer WILLIAM LEMON III worked with Ebony Bones on her latest video (HSI Productions). The t-shirts he created for United Bamboo can be found in-stores. His fine art work is included in the show 2THEWALL at New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles in February.
