JOÃO CANZIANI TEAMS UP WITH WIEDEN+KENNEDY TO CREATE VERIZON BRAND LIBRARY

Wieden+Kennedy tapped João to create an image library for Verizon as part of the company’s last shoot with the agency before moving creative in-house. Production took place across two cities—San Francisco, CA and Savannah, GA—and showcases the range of interests Verizon customers have and the ways they use their technology to stay connected no matter where they are. As this was the last shoot in which W+K would team up with Verizon, the creative team went all out.

“One reason I love working with W+K is because they come with concepts, but they’re open to new ideas and new approaches, too, and invite me to have a voice,” João says.

As with all his shoots, João was a thoughtful and detailed collaborator. He explains, “Every element of the shoot is as important as the other—as they say, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s this seamless marriage and attentive thought to concept, lighting, composition, locations, styling, and casting that increases our chances of success.”

Fast Facts

• shot in 2 locations: San Francisco and Savannah

• average of 1,300 deliverables, shot on medium format, per day

• image library was used over multiple years across all media

With 20+ extras and between 5-8 principal talent per day, João created multiple worlds that all fit together in the same connected universe. “Even though these shots are pre-produced, you as a viewer still feel like you’ve been in these situations, so you identify with the scenarios,” says João. “We approached it in a cinematic way. That image in the nightclub with a DJ—we were playing music really loud, and everyone had their hands up and we were all having a really good time. It becomes an emotional experience for the viewer, too.”

Because of all the preparation on the front end, the shoot went smoothly, and João impressively photographed a beautiful collection of images for Verizon.
