GRACE RIVERA + DP JON GOURLAY JOIN FORCES FOR EAZY TIGER MAGAZINE

For her second contribution to fashion and beauty magazine Eazy Tiger, Grace teamed up with DP Jon Gourlay, her longtime collaborator, for a feature called “Mirror, Mirror.” Her inspiration? Erwin Blumenfeld's 1939 photograph “Know Thyself,” in which a woman gazes into a table that reflects her image back to herself.

“I wanted to put a modern spin on self-image by playing off of classic Hollywood imagery of women grooming themselves and staring into mirrors,” explains Grace. “We were drawn to Eazy Tiger because it’s a publication dedicated to amplifying female and non-binary photographers/directors.”

When she and Jon sat down to edit the motion, it became clear to them that the voiceover should feel like the woman was thinking out loud.

“She’s processing a stream of consciousness while in this sort of fast-paced urban environment,” says Grace. “Our project is a loose homage to how women speak to themselves daily—whether that be out loud or not—and instead of doubting themselves, owning who they are and accepting that they are enough.”
