MYLES LOFTIN FEATURED IN BET DOCUMENTARY
BET and Firelight Films invited Myles to be a part of their documentary Black + Iconic: Style Gods, specifically calling out his “maverick sense of style.” The documentary is directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Stanley Nelson and narrated by Billy Porter.
In the documentary, Myles voices his thoughts on subjects ranging from pop icon Rihanna to early 20th century photographer James Van Der Zee. Of the latter, Myles says in the documentary, “James Van Der Zee’s portraits of Black people were so iconic—they set the standard for us seeing ourselves as valuable and to prove that we’re here too, and we deserve to show it off.”
“Black + Iconic: Style Gods” aired on BET Networks during Black History Month in 2023 and is currently streaming on BET Plus. Watch here.
BET’s press release explains that the documentary “celebrates Black cultural icons, pioneers, and activists and their impact, influence, and legacies in fashion. Weaving dazzling archival footage and original interviews with legendary Black models, fashion designers, and style icons, ‘Black + Iconic: Style Gods’ explores the myriad ways Black people have overcome racism to ultimately blaze an undeniable trail from the streets through the most exclusive runways of high fashion.”
Also featured in the film: BTS footage of Myles on set (shooting Serena Williams for Away, a Maison Kitsuné Pride campaign, and Ziwe for her Showtime series), plus an example of one of his far-reaching Instagram posts used to showcase the power of social media.
"It was a great honor and a really cool opportunity to be asked to share my thoughts and experience as a Black creative working in the industry," says Myles. "It’s important to honor the achievements Black people have made in fashion despite the obstacles that we face. I was really excited to speak on camera and be a part of a historical moment."
