Signs and Voices is the product of a photography workshop conducted by Peter Sutherland and Maia Ruth Lee, who spent four days in the outskirts of Kathmandu working with a group of Nepalese children. Among the ten participants, five were deaf and five were former street children. For the duration of the project, they communicated in sign language, took photographs of their environment, and collaborated with one another, learning about documentation and portraiture and ultimately assembling a collection of hauntingly beautiful images of family, friends, colorful interiors, and the lush countryside of Nepal.
